The Farmers' Almanac

Shares the Legends and Lore of Valentine’s Day
According to English tradition, a woman will marry the first man she sees on Valentine’s Day.

The first recorded Valentine was sent in 1415, by Charles, Duke of Orleans.

The tomato is also known as the “love apple.”

Scrimshaw, the art of scratching or carving designs into bone, tusk, or wood originated as love tokens from sailors.

The practice of using an “X” to represent kisses grew out of the medieval practice of letting those who could not write mark documents with an “X” in place of their names. This was done in the presence of witnesses, and a kiss was given upon the “X” to show sincerity. The “X” then became synonymous with the kiss in the minds of most people.

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

Music Trivia

Garth Brooks married his college sweetheart, songwriter Sandy Mahl, on May 24, 1986. They met when Garth was a bouncer at a bar. Brooks and Mahl separated in March 1999, announcing their plans to divorce on October 9, 2000.

Struggling songwriter Hugh Nelson, (later known as Willie Nelson), was a regular at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge on Nashville's Music Row. One night he met Patsy Cline's husband, Charlie Dick at the bar and pitched the song “Crazy” to him.

In 1974, Dolly Parton scored 4 country #1 singles: “Jolene”, “I Will Always Love You”, “Please Don't Stop Loving Me”, (with Porter Wagoner) and “Love Is Like a Butterfly.”

Weekly Horoscope: For Feb. 8, 2015  by Georgia Nicols
This is for the week of Feb. 8th thru Feb. 14th

All Signs On Wednesday this week, Mercury retrograde is over, which means there will be fewer goofy, silly mistakes. However, for major purchases like computers and cars, wait until March 4 to be safe. (The shadow of Mercury retrograde.) On Saturday, we have Valentine's Day, so heads up, all romantics. Even if you are not romantic - your partner is. A gesture is all it takes. Trust me. To let this day go by unnoticed is not cool. A card, a rose - something. Because these are the major issues this week, and they are minor, let's take a long-range look at the future since we're all going to spend the rest of our lives there.                              CLICK HERE FOR THE WEEKLY HOROSCOPE OF YOUR SIGN
