Yes, it's true, Gunsmoke started out as a radio show. Here's a little bit of info about it:
Gunsmoke was an American radio and television Western drama series created by
Norman MacDonnell and John Meston. The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas,
during the settlement of the American West. The central character is lawman
Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television.
Gunsmoke was on CBS radio for 9 years, 1952 / 1961. Six of those years the radio shows ran along with the television series. A total of 413 radio shows were broadcast 480 time. The television version ran for 20 seasons
from 1955 to 1975, and was the United States' longest-running prime time, live-action drama with 635 episodes.
