Agen Plum
The prized California Dried Plum was born when agriculturists brought the legendary Agen plum from Southwest France to California in 1856 and grafted it onto wild American plum stock. More than 150 years later, California has upwards of 49,000 acres planted to prune plum trees. With less than 1 percent of that in other varieties. Approximately 99 percent of the U.S. supply and 41 percent of the world’s supply are produced in California.

The difference between apple juice and apple cider is that apple juice is the juice of the fruit only, and apple cider is the whole apple-skins, seeds, and all- which gives it the fuller body and deeper color. The juice is pasteurized and the cider is not.

The daughter of confectioner Leo Hirschfield is commemorated in the name of the sweet he invented: Although his daughter's real name was Clara, she went by the nickname Tootsie, and in her honor, her doting father named his chewy chocolate logs Tootsie Rolls.

Gasoline rationing using coupons begins
Rubber Shortage is what tipped the balance, it wasn’t a gasoline shortage but a rubber shortage. The United States faced a serious shortage of rubber and didn’t have enough for military needs, much less civilian needs. While tires and other rubber items were rationed, the simplest way to reduce wear and tear on tires was to restrict driving. Also in 1942, a nationwide Victory Speed of 35 mph was instituted, since higher speeds remove tread more quickly.

Weekly Horoscope: For July 19, 2015  by Georgia Nicols
This is for the week of July 19th thru July 25th
All Signs:

This week, the Sun moves into Leo for the first time in a year introducing a playful energy in the world because Leo governs the theater, show business, the entertainment world, sports and children. Oh, let's not forget romance, romance, romance! For the next four weeks, expect a focus on romantic adventures, playful times with children, sports plus the entertainment world and the arts. We should all make plans to schmooze and have fun! Hey - grab the courage to ask someone for a date. Take the plunge, (but return it by Thursday). Enjoy this last ride of Jupiter in Leo before it leaves on August 11 not to return until 2026. (Do not resist temptation - it might not come your way again.)
