FOOD TRIVIA

During World War II, bakers in the United States were ordered to stop selling sliced bread for the duration of the war on January 18, 1943. Only whole loaves were made available to the public. It was never explained how this action helped the war effort.

Jesse James robs Obocock Bank
Jesse James & his gang robbed the
Obocock Brothers’ Bank in Corydon, Iowa. It was robbed by Jesse and his gang when he was 24 years old. At the time of the robbery, the bank was occupied by a lone cashier. During this robbery no one was shot or injured. It was reported that they got $15,000. Jesse was a former confederate guerrilla during the US Civil war, James became an outlaw and bandit notorious for robbing banks and trains. He formed gangs with his brother Frank and other associates. He evaded capture for about 15 years. Jesse was eventually killed for reward money in 1882 by Robert Ford a member of his gang.

A sudden cloudburst kills 120 near Pikes Peak, Colorado. Pueblo Colorado was flooded by a twenty-five foot crest of the Arkansas River. Fourteen inches of rain was reported at Boggs Flat, where a hard surface road that ran through nearly level country was washed out to a depth of seven feet.

French Liner SS Normandie sets
Atlantic crossing record.

Fifty thousand people came to Le Havre to see the large ship off, on what was hoped would be a record-breaking crossing. And indeed it was. The SS Normandie reached New York after just four days, three hours and fourteen minutes thus snatching away the Blue Riband from the Italian liner Rex.
She entered service as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat; she is still the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever built. Her novel design and lavish interiors led many to consider her the greatest of ocean liners. Despite this, she was not a commercial success and relied partly on government subsidy to operate. During service as the flagship of the CGT, she made 139 westbound transatlantic crossings from her home port of Le Havre to New York. Normandie held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing at several points during her service career,

The bikini bathing suit is 69 years old
‘Le bikini’, a suit of four triangles made from only 30 inches of fabric, made its debut in Paris in 1946. Unable to find a model who would wear it, the bikini’s creator Louis Reard enlisted a nude dancer to pose for photographs. Mr. Reard was a French engineer by profession but in the mid-1940s, he was running his mother’s lingerie business.

He had noticed women on the beaches of St. Tropez rolling up their bathing suits to try to get a better tan. He and French designer Jacques Heim were in competition to produce the world’s smallest swimsuit. While Mr. Heim’s two-piece was the first to be worn on the beach, it was Mr. Reard that gave the bikini its memorable name.”

Dragnet was first broadcast on radio

in (Los Angeles KFI), it went national on NBC a month later. It stared Jack Webb as (Detective Joe Friday) he insisted on realism in every aspect of the show. The dialogue was clipped, understated and sparse, an was influenced by the hard boiled school of crime fiction.

Weekly Horoscope: For May 31, 2015  by Georgia Nicols
This is for the week of May 31st thru June 6th

All Signs Venus stays in one sign for three weeks. But starting now, Venus is in Leo until October 8. Holy Lollypop! This will be the flavour of our summer! Venus has the power of attraction. It draws things to you - especially love, romance, money and fun times. It's a social planet. Venus is also the expression of the creativity. Think of it this way: Neptune (perfection) was the music Beethoven heard, but Venus is what he wrote. This summer, we will all be blessed with the perfume of Venus in Leo. It will permeate our lives with romance, prosperity and pleasure. With too much of a good thing going it seems appropriate for a word from that famous Leo, Mae West. Take your pick: "I like restraint if it doesn't go too far." Or, "Did you get a hair cut or have your ears moved down?"
