Photos Of Yesterday

I found an old copy of the Florida Flea Market Guide from June 1980. "Mr. Dalton Merseal" from Webster published it monthly. Click On The Photo To View All Pages. Many of the markets are no longer in business.
If anyone has a photo of Dalton and his buddy, I would appreciate a copy to add to the page.

1st American to swim English Channel
(Henry Sullivan)
First American. Henry Sullivan was the third person and first American to swim the English Channel. Sullivan was 34 years old when he completed his crossing of the English Channel, after six failed attempts. He was only the third person, and the first American, to accomplish the feat. The direct distance from Dover, England, to Calais, France, is 22.5 miles, but after being pushed off course by strong tides, it is estimated that the stocky, 5-foot-7-inch Sullivan ended up swimming 56 miles.

Comic strip "Little Orphan Annie"
by Harold Gray debuts
The strip took its name from the 1885 poem "Little Orphant Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley, and made its debut on August 5, 1924 in the New York Daily News. It ranked number one in popularity in a Fortune poll in 1937. The plot follows the wide-ranging adventures of Annie, her dog Sandy and her benefactor Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. Secondary characters include Punjab, the Asp and Mr. Am. The strip attracted adult readers with political commentary that targeted (among other things) organized labor, the New Deal and communism.

Houdini stays in a coffin under water
for 1½ hrs before escaping

Although he was born in Europe, Houdini was brought to America by his family at age 2. As a magician Houdini started out by performing card tricks before moving on to escape acts. He first began to escape from handcuffs, often challenging local police to cuff him. He then started an act of escaping from a locked water filled milk container, and on to straitjackets, and then most famously a Chinese water torture cell where Houdini had to hold his breath for 3 minutes. He became the most famous vaudeville act in America, often filming his escapes.

Born on this day Neil Armstrong,  of Wapakoneta Ohio, 1st Moon-walker (Gemini 8, Apollo 11),
(d. 2012) (Neil would have been 85 this year)
Neil Armstrong was a humble hero who made “a giant leap for mankind” when he was the first man to step foot on the moon on July 20th, 1969. When he was 10 years old, Armstrong was paid $1 to mow the cemetery in Wapakoneta, Ohio, the small town where he was born August 5th, 1930. It was one of many odd jobs the enterprising young Armstrong had around town, and eventually he earned enough money to pay for $9-per-hour flying lessons. He fell in love with flying at an early age, and earned his pilot’s license on his 16th birthday even before he received his driver’s license.

"American Bandstand" premieres on network TV (ABC)

Picture
Dick Clark debuted as the host of American Bandstand when the television show went national. Television, rock and roll and teenagers. In the late 1950s, when television and rock and roll were new and when the biggest generation in American history was just about to enter its teens (post WWII Baby Boomers), The man who took that show into history was a 26-year-old native of upstate New York named Dick Clark, who transformed himself and a local Philadelphia television program into two of the most culturally significant forces of the early rock-and-roll era.

118°F at Ice Harbor Dam, Washington (state record)
It was on that day Ice Harbor Dam established the all time record high temperature for the state of Washington. The dam’s weather instruments peaked at 118 °F temperature.  Nearby Richland suffered at 113 °F.  Dayton, to the east, wilted at 114 °F.
And this was before Al Gore ever thought of "global warming"

Marilyn Monroe, found dead of apparent self-inflicted drug overdose at age 36.
Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926. Her mother was emotionally unstable and frequently confined to an asylum, so Norma Jean was reared by a succession of foster parents and in an orphanage. At the age of 16, she married a fellow worker in an aircraft factory, but they divorced a few years later. She took up modeling in 1944 and in 1946 signed a short-term contract with 20th Century Fox, taking as her screen name Marilyn Monroe. She had a few bit parts and then returned to modeling, famously posing nude for a calendar in 1949.
