Watermelon is grown in over 96 countries worldwide. Over
1,200 varieties of watermelon are grown in the world. There are about
200 varieties of watermelon throughout the US. The watermelon, considered one of America's favorite fruits, is really a vegetable (Citrullus lanatus). Cousin to the cucumber and kin to the gourd, watermelons can range in size from 7 to 100 pounds. However all the watermelons below are much larger than that. The photos show watermelons that broke local, state or regional records for the largest melons grown through the years. They range from 190 pounds to 350 pounds. The current world record for water melon is claimed by Chris Kent of NZ. It rocked the scales at 350.5 pound. CLICK ON ANY PHOTO TO ENLARGE

Did You Know Of the 3,000 islands in the Bahama chain in the Caribbean, only 20 are inhabited. Table tennis balls have been known to travel off a paddle at speeds up to 100 mph. In 1995, KFC sold 11 pieces of chicken for every man, woman and child in the US. In the United States, a pound of potato chips costs two hundred times more than a pound of potatoes. Potato chips were invented in Saratoga Springs in 1853 by chef George Crum. They were a mocking response to a patron who complained that his French fries were too thick. Research show that only 43% of homemade dinners served in the US include vegetables. The dye used to stamp the grade on meat is edible. It's made from grape skins. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Kris Kristofferson said that he got the inspiration for “Help Me Make It Through the Night” from an Esquire magazine interview with Frank Sinatra. When asked what he believed in, Frank had replied, "Booze, broads, or a bible...whatever helps me make it through the night."
Tap dancing originates from Irish clog dancing and what is called the Irish reel and jig. The harmonica is the world’s best-selling music instrument. Before they were known as Journey, Steve Perry called his band Golden Gate Rhythm Section. <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <>
Discovered accidentally by a picnicking family in a remote hilly wooded
area of northwestern Madagascar in 2006, but only recognized to be a
dramatically new species and genus following DNA analysis a year later,
the Tahina palm tree (Tahina spectabilis) was not officially
named and described until January 2008. What makes this species’ belated
scientific discovery so surprising is its huge size, standing over 18 m
(58 ft 6 in) tall, with fan-like leaves 5 m (16 ft) across, and its
bizarre, suicidal life cycle. Taking decades to bloom, when it does it
produces an explosion of hundreds of nectar-rich flowers towering above
its crown, each of which develops into fruit, but in so doing the tree’s
nutrients become so depleted that as soon as it has fruited the tree
collapses and dies. CLICK PHOTO TO ENLARGE

86 Years Ago On July 1, 1929 US cartoonist Elzie Segar creates "Popeye"
Popeye the Sailor Man is a cartoon fictional character, created by Elzie Crisler Segar, who has appeared in comic strips and theatrical and television animated cartoons. Although Segar's Thimble Theatre strip was in its tenth year when Popeye made his debut, the sailor quickly became the main focus of the strip and Thimble Theatre soon became one of King Features' most popular properties during the 1930s. Thimble Theatre was continued after Segar's death in 1938 by several writers and artists, <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <>

Bulova Watch Co pays $9 for 1st ever network TV commercial Let’s set the scene: The Brooklyn Dodgers are playing the Philadelphia Phillies at Ebbets Field on July 1, 1941, and the game is being aired on WNBT-TV (later to become WNBC). Before the game begins, TV viewers see this: a 10-second advertisement for Bulova clocks and watches. The ad shows a clock and a map of the United States, with a voice-over that says, “America runs on Bulova time.” This little spot (which ran at 2:29 pm, if you’re keeping Bulova time) marked the advent of something much bigger — commercialized television. Earlier in 1941, the FCC had approved a plan to turn TV into big business. When Bulova paid $9 dollars to plug its brand, the plan was actualized. <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <>

ZIP Codes are introduced for United States mail. ZIP codes are a system of postal codes used by the United States Postal Service (USPS) since 1963. The term ZIP, an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan, was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently, and therefore more quickly (zipping along), when senders use the code in the postal address. The basic format consists of five decimal numerical digits. It may surprise you to learn that postal zones were instituted in 1943 during WWII. They were necessary because many postal clerks had gone into the service and the new inexperienced postal clerks were having trouble sorting the mail. The zone system was put in place to make things easier. <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <> <>
